Speaking on Wednesday, June 4, Nairobi County's Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, said the county government has ramped up its nighttime operations to tackle this public health issue.

"During an overnight operation in Nairobi’s CBD, I supervised a cleanup and enforcement effort focused on curbing public urination and illegal waste disposal by businesses. Several people were arrested for violating environmental regulations," Mosiria told TUKO.co.ke.
The environment chief emphasised that the operations would continue daily, highlighting the county's unwavering commitment to maintaining cleanliness, ensuring public health, and upholding the rule of law throughout Nairobi.
"A cleaner city is not just a responsibility; it is a right that reflects the dignity of every resident and visitor," he stated.
As part of the ongoing crackdown, several individuals were arrested after being caught urinating in public within the Central Business District, further underscoring the city's determination to tackle environmental violations and promote responsible behaviour.
"They are urinating all over. Today, we have arrested all of them so they can be taken to court. We are in the process of preventing people from urinating at the Nairobi CBD," Mosiria added.

30 people ordered to clean mortuary after urinating in public
In a separate incident, on August 20, 2024, at least 30 individuals were sentenced to community service after being arrested for urinating in public spaces.
The offenders were assigned various tasks, including cleaning the Nairobi Funeral Home (City Mortuary), sweeping the CBD, and tidying up Uhuru Park.
This move came as part of a broader effort by local authorities to curb the growing issue of public urination in the city.

During a visit to the City Mortuary, Mosiria stated that the community service punishment was intended to send a clear message to others and serve as a deterrent against similar offenses in the future.
This crackdown on illegal urination was part of a larger initiative led by Mosiria, who recently launched a more stringent enforcement campaign across Nairobi county.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Mosiria made it clear that any individual caught urinating on the streets of Nairobi would face immediate arrest and legal action.
