Migori: Locals Stage Demo after Young Man was Killed over Motorbike Theft Suspicion

Transport along the busy Migori-Isebania Highway was disrupted for the better part of Wednesday, June 11, as angry locals staged a protest over the recent murder of a young man.

The man was allegedly killed in Migori town in May after being suspected of being a motorbike thief.
As his body was transported to his rural home in the Mabera area for burial, the locals staged a protest, blocking the highway as they demanded that those behind his brutal murder be arrested and prosecuted.

The locals accused the police of failing to investigate the incident.
They insisted that he was an upright citizen, contrary to claims that he was involved in the theft of a motorbike that led to his death.
“We have lived in peace with our brother, and we have never witnessed him act irresponsibly,” one of the locals, Cleopatra Ghati, angrily said.
“Our brother didn’t steal from anyone. His killers acted on suspicions, and we want them brought to book. All we want is justice for our brother, nothing else,” added Ezekiel Bohoko Rarioba, the deceased's brother.
Anti-riot police officers were later deployed to the area to disperse the protesters and restore traffic flow on the highway.

The locals were later calmed by the officers. The police officers also escorted them, alongside the body, to the deceased family’s home.
Kuria West sub-county police commander Reuben Bet told TUKO.co.ke that calm was restored later in the evening.

He also called on the locals to remain patient as the police investigate the circumstances under which the young man lost his life.
“We had an incident in Mabera area but the police managed to calm down the mourners and normalcy was restored,” Bet said.
“Nobody was injured in the protests, and I want to urge the locals to remain peaceful as we are still investigating the matter,” he added.
Kakamega locals chase away police officers
Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that locals in Seregeya area, Likuyani sub-county in Kakamega county, staged a protest over rise in insecurity following murder of a night guard following a night attack.
During the protests, the angry locals chased away police officers who had been deployed to pick up the guard's body.
The locals who had blocked the Turbo-Soy Road using stones accused the police of laxity and demanded that all the officers in the area be transferred as a measure to enhance their overall security.
They said in the last two months, three people have been killed in night attacks and no suspects had been arrested.
