Nakuru M-Pesa attendant murder probe

An officer investigating the murder told the court on Tuesday, June 17, that the husband, Zacharia Wanjohi, had declined to reveal his residence to facilitate the search as part of the investigation into the murder incident.

Wanjohi was arrested on suspicion of being involved in his wife’s disappearance and subsequent murder.

Appearing before senior resident magistrate Cynthia Muhoro, the investigating officer, Richard Kipsang, said that he had tried to get information from the suspect on his known residence but had been uncooperative, hindering his conclusion of the investigation.

It is on this basis that the prosecution filed an application seeking orders to allow the police to continue holding him in custody.

“He is a flight risk and therefore we are asking the court to allow further detention of the suspect for a further 14 days to enable the conclusion of the investigations. He has not disclosed his residence despite our several attempts,” the court was told.

The court was also informed that the police had arrested another suspect believed to have played a part in the murder of the Nakuru M-Pesa attendant.

He has since been presented in court.

Was Hanna Waithera killed by her husband?

According to an officer investigating the matter, so far, the suspect’s mobile phone has undergone forensic analysis at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). However, the analysis is not yet complete

“We also took samples from the deceased to the government chemist, and due to the short time frame, we need additional time to wrap up the case, including arresting more suspects, before forwarding the file to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for review,” the officer told the court.

He further said they need to do a mental assessment of the suspect to ascertain his state of mind before he is formally charged with murder.

The accused, however, objected to the application for his extended detention. He argued that he was arrested, and an application for the same purpose was made on June 3, 2025.

According to Wanjohi, the police have already taken his DNA samples, and they are only awaiting a report, which can be done even if he is released.

The court directed that he be detained for a further seven days instead of the requested 14. The magistrate, in issuing the order, said the police had covered substantial areas of the case.

When did Hannah Waithera go missing?

TUKO.co.ke had reported that the Nakuru M-Pesa attendant went missing on May 25, 2025.

It is believed she was to deposit KSh 250,000 to her boss's bank account in Nakuru town at the time she disappeared.

Her body was later found at a Nakuru county mortuary, with reports indicating she had been found at Technology Farm, within the Rift Valley National Polytechnic.
