The suspect, however, is said to have returned later to the house and killed the woman.
The area chief said preliminary investigations indicate that the woman was beaten and later strangled to death.
"Some thieves entered her house, stole maize, and they left, but on realising that he had been identified, it seems the young man was worried and decided to come back and kill her,” the chief told TUKO.co.ke in an exclusive interview.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday, June 17, and taken to Kitale Police Station, where he is being held before being arraigned in court.
Initially, angry residents refused to allow police officers to pick up the body of the deceased woman until the suspect was produced.

"We managed to calm them and assured them that the suspect will face the full force of the law," the chief stated.
