Vihiga Set to Become First County with Its Own Anthem, Asks Residents to Share Ideas

Residents of Vihiga have been presented with a unique opportunity to help shape their county’s identity through the creation of its first official anthem.

The county government, through the Department of Gender, Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Services, launched a week-long public participation exercise aimed at involving citizens in developing a unifying anthem.

The forums, scheduled for June 30 to July 4, will take place in each of the five sub-counties and are designed to bring together community voices to inspire the composition.

The sessions will begin daily at 9:00 am and will be hosted at specific venues: Ivona Friends Church in Sabatia on June 30, Vihiga Friends Church on July 1, Ebusakami ACK Holy Trinity Church in Luanda on July 2, Ebukhooli ACK Church in Emuhaya on July 3, and Munzatsi Friends Church in Hamisi on July 4.

According to the county's public notice seen by TUKO.co.ke, the forums are meant to be inclusive, ensuring broad community input in crafting an anthem that truly represents Vihiga’s cultural identity and collective aspirations.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early to enable smooth coordination of the sessions.

Why does Vihiga want its own anthem?

This initiative is part of the implementation of the Vihiga County Flag and Other Symbols Act, 2014, which empowers the county to adopt official symbols that embody its values and heritage.

The process is being overseen by the County Symbols Selection Committee, housed within the Department of Gender, Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Services.

Following the conclusion of the forums, the county will officially announce a call for anthem compositions on July 7. Interested individuals or groups will have until July 30 to submit their entries in both hard and soft copy formats.

Submissions should be addressed to the chairperson of the Vihiga County Symbols Selection Panel.

Hard copy entries can be hand-delivered to the Governor’s Office in Mbale, while digital versions should be emailed to: cecm.genderyouthsocialservices@vihiga.go.ke.
