Uasin Gishu: 2 Killed, 1 Injured After Drunk Police Officer Opens Fire at Wife's Bar

Did police officer open fire in wife's club?

According to a police report seen by TUKO.co.ke, a police officer identified as Eric Kirui shot at locals who were making merry at his wife's bar on Thursday, June 26.

Two people, including Kirui's wife, Caroline Malakwen, were killed, while one other person was injured.

The area residents reported the matter to the police, who arrived at the scene in an attempt to get the situation under control.

"It was reported by members of the public that there was an officer by the name Erick Kirui armed with a firearm and had shot members of the public in Kokwet bar within Juakali Centre. The scene was visited by OCS Jua Kali together with officers from the Sugoi patrol base," the police statement read in part.

The police report further stated that it was established that Kirui was under the influence of alcohol when he carried out the heinous act.

The officer who was attached to the Tembelio police station in Moiben Sub-county was eventually subdued and arrested while attempting to flee the pub.

"He was armed with an AK-47 rifle and was very drunk and violent. With the reinforcement of the officers who turned up, he was arrested and disarmed while attempting to flee from Kokwet pub. An AK-47 rifle serial number KP, 5521789, loaded with 22 rounds of 7.62 X 39 special, was recovered. He had shot dead two members of the public," the police added.

Other than Malakwen, the other individual who passed away following the shooting was identified as Ignatius Kipchumba, commonly known as Mwala. The injured man was identified as Stephen Mbifa.

"During the incident, one, namely Antony Stephen Mbifa, was hit by a ricochet and sustained an injury on his right side of his head. The scene was visited by the Turbo sub-county police Commander and DCI Turbo. The same was processed by crime scene officers."

The two bodies were later transported to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret, pending autopsy.

Upon further investigations, Tembelio Police Station confirmed that they had issued Kirui with a firearm for his night duties.

The police established that the suspect, instead of conducting his nightly duties, took a boda boda, which he used to get to his wife's bar.

Police officer shoots man in the head

In a previous incident, tensions escalated in Nairobi CBD on Tuesday, June 17, when a mask vendor was shot by an anti-riot police officer.

Responding to the incident, protesters rushed to the man's aid, taking him to the Bliss Medical Centre for medical attention before he was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he underwent two life-saving surgeries.

The incident happened during the Justice for Albert Ojwang demonstrations on Tuesday, June 17.
