KMPDU Fulfilled as Government Announces Posting of Over 6,000 Medical Interns

Government urges medical interns to collect letters

In a statement released on Friday, June 27, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale noted that the interns will be deployed to accredited internship centres for a 12-month structured programme that will provide supervised clinical training and real-world healthcare exposure.

Duale urged all eligible pre-interns to collect their posting letters in person on Monday, June 30, from 9am at Afya House, Nairobi.

"Please note that posting letters will only be issued upon presentation of a valid National Identity Card. Timely collection will facilitate smooth reporting and preparation at the designated facilities," the statement read.

KMPDU welcomes deployment, urges interns to collect letters

Following the announcement, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has welcomed the move, describing it as a long-awaited victory for medical interns.

KMPDU secretary general Davji Atellah confirmed that all doctor interns will be posted as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“This is the fruit of our struggle. We have protested and demonstrated for these letters, and now we must turn up with the same energy to collect them,” said Dr. Atellah.

He added that KMPDU officials will be present at Afya House by 8am on June 30 to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

Atellah affirmed that over 1,700 doctor interns are expected to report, stressing the importance of safeguarding the sanctity of the CBA.

"The sanctity of our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) has been restored. Tell a colleague to tell a colleague—we are stronger together, in solidarity," he added.

Intern doctors thank Atellah for negotiating their KSh 206k pay

In other news, speaking during the KMPDU members' annual delegates conference, medical interns expressed their gratitude towards the union and its leader, Davji, for their steadfast support in securing a KSh 206,000 salary during the industrial action.

The interns acknowledged that while they were initially willing to accept a KSh 70,000 salary, Davji and the union's efforts strengthened their resolve.

Although they lost some colleagues in the process, they were confident that those who passed would be proud of the outcome.

The interns praised Davji's resilience, highlighting how his leadership carried them through a challenging time, teaching them the importance of conviction and perseverance.
