Albert Ojwang: Mawego Police Station Set on Fire as Protests over Police Brutality Erupt

Just a day after a requiem mass was held in honour of the late blogger Albert Ojwang, Homa Bay residents took to the streets demanding justice.

An irate crowd stormed the Mawego Police Station on Thursday, July 3, where Ojwang was detained before being transported to the Nairobi Central Police Station, where he died.
Why Mawego Police Station was burned
In fury, they set the station on fire as they demanded justice for the death of the blogger and teacher.

They afterwards marched the streets of Homa Bay as they carried the coffin of the deceased back to his home in Kasipul Kabondo.
The large crowd that followed the people carrying Ojwang's coffin was heard chanting and screaming in disappointment at the circumstances that surrounded the blogger's death.
Photos seen by TUKO.co.ke showed the police station completely engulfed in flames as the officers watched helplessly.
The body of the blogger was airlifted to Homa Bay after his requiem mass in Nairobi.
The service was attended by close family members and politicians, including former Public Service CS Justin Muturi and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya.
During the requiem mass, Meshack Opiyo, Ojwang's father, left a strong message to his son's killers.
He quoted the biblical story of Cain and Abel, stating that the blood of an innocent person never stops crying for justice.

When is Albert Ojwang's burial?
Ojwang's burial ceremony is set to take place at his home village in Kasipul on Friday, July 4.
The teacher's death drew a lot of public outcry as a section of Kenyans took to the streets to protest, demanding justice.
Others called for the resignation of the Deputy Inspector General of police, Eliud Lagat.
Prior to Ojwang's arrest, Lagat had filed a complaint with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over an alleged defamatory statement on the blogger's X page.
Albert Ojwang's wife breaks down
This incident comes hours after Nevnina Onyango Omondi, Ojwang’s widow, paid an emotional tribute to her husband.

Struggling to hold back her tears, the widow recalled how he first met with Ojwang. She stated that they met through a mutual friend in 2021.
The two were blessed with a son whom Nevnina was left taking care of.
She stated that her partner had left at an unexpected moment, as they had planned so much together.
The distressed widow disclosed that their little son was not aware of his father's death.
