The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is mourning the loss of three soldiers who were killed on Tuesday, July 15, following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Lamu county.

The explosion occurred in the Badaah area along the Kiunga-Sankuri Road as the soldiers were returning from transporting fellow officers to Sankuri.

According to Citizen Digital, Lamu East Deputy County Commissioner George Kubai confirmed that seven other officers sustained injuries in the incident.

The injured soldiers were rushed to Kiunga Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Following the deadly blast, security agencies launched a major operation to track down those behind the attack.

Local reports suggested growing concern over increased terrorist activity in the region.

The incident comes just days after another IED attack in Mandera, near the Kenya-Somalia border, where seven police officers were injured.

The officers were on routine patrol from Bambo to Mandera town when their vehicle ran over an explosive between Aresa and Khalalio, a few kilometres from the Mandera Police Station.

The incident occurred when a lorry transporting timber reportedly lost its brakes and rammed into a stationary vehicle parked by the roadside.

The brothers had stopped briefly as their wives visited a nearby shop to buy food. Both men died on the spot, while their wives and a neighbour, who was also present, escaped unhurt.

The two victims were the only sons in their family, adding to the heartbreak as their deaths came as a devastating blow to their loved ones.
