The child, a beautiful baby boy, was well-dressed and covered to protect him from the cold night.

In panic, the woman called her in-law, Sammy Ngare Ondimu, a police officer, seeking advice on what to do.

The officer told TUKO.co.ke that he advised her accordingly and was relieved the baby had been rescued.

“She called me even before she left the house to find the child. I told her to call a few of her neighbours to accompany her to find the infant and inform the chief afterwards,” he said.

Ngare also confirmed that the infant was taken to the children's department in Nyamira county, as relevant authorities carry out investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment.

“I truly understand life can be hard, and I don’t know what could have pushed the mother to such a decision. But I’m grateful the baby was found alive. May he grow to see brighter days,” he shared.

Netizens react after infant is abandoned at night

The incident ignited emotional responses with some netizens expressing sympathy for the mother, citing possible postnatal depression or lack of support, while others called for a deeper investigation.

Violet Moraa:

“As a mother of two, I don't judge. My heart goes out to the baby. Both parents failed the baby, not just the mother.”

Daniel Abuga:

“Post-delivery depression can be overwhelming when one does not have a good support system. She did a good thing; instead of killing the child, she looked for a better alternative. Please let’s not judge a mother. If she endured nine months till birth, then something must have snapped to trigger such a decision. Or the father of that child is close to that area. All she wanted was to return the child to the sender. Investigate more.”

Purie Mum Xavier:

“Mimi naona the father of the baby is just within. I have seen a story where a lady abandoned a child next to a certain home, and it was the mzee of the boma who suggested that the child be taken care of by the wife. The wife raised the child, and they named him ‘Atolwa’. The child resembled the children of that mzee. When he was ill, he told his family that Atolwa is his biological son.”

Why did Nakuru mum abandon newborn baby?

In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a woman abandoned her newborn baby at a hospital in Nakuru.

She reportedly left immediately after giving birth to the infant, who had deformities. The baby was born without a nose, and his skull was not fully formed.

A doctor at the hospital said the mother even refused to breastfeed the child before fleeing, and has since appealed to well-wishers for help in funding the infant’s surgery.
