Despite neighbours responding swiftly, efforts to rescue the younger children were futile. Their charred remains were recovered after firefighters and villagers managed to extinguish the flames.
What caused Nyeri fire that killed 2 children?
According to the family, the cause of the fire remains unclear, as there was reportedly no fire or cooking activity in the house at the time of the incident.
The children’s mother, Joyce Wangechi, was away visiting her ailing mother, who was discharged from the hospital that same day.
“There was a huge fire at home yesterday, and my cousin’s children perished. We were returning from the hospital after picking up their mother when we received a call that the house was on fire," said Wizzy Chris, a relative.
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi visited the grieving family to offer support and condolences.
"I spent time with the family of Mary Wanjugu Githinji, whose home was tragically reduced to ashes while she was still admitted to the hospital. Words fail to capture the weight of this tragedy,” Wamumbi said.
“We also stand with Gerald Gachari, who lost his entire four-roomed house in the same fire. Everything he had built, gone in an instant. We mourn with them, comfort them, and will support them. Let us lift this family in prayer, and let our hearts remain open in kindness and compassion as they try to pick up the pieces. May young Victor and Scholar rest in eternal peace," he added.

The remains of the two children were taken to the Karatina Sub-County Morgue.
Woman, 4 children die in night fire
Elsewhere, in Isiolo county, a family of five was tragically killed in a house fire believed to be a case of arson linked to a suspected love triangle.
The night inferno, which claimed the lives of a 45-year-old woman, her three children, and their cousin, was reportedly sparked by a domestic dispute involving allegations of infidelity.
According to Senior Chief Abdi Dida, the fire was suspected to have been intentionally set following claims that the mother was involved in a relationship with another woman’s husband.
Preliminary findings revealed that the suspected arsonist had previously threatened the victim over the alleged affair.
