His arrest came after Edward Maingi Ndegwa was found killed inside ward 7B on Thursday, July 17, just months after another patient, Gilbert Kinyua, was murdered in the same ward.

However, efforts by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to get information from Kalombotole bore no fruit because he appeared disoriented.
The man was booked at the Kilimani Police Station as the prime suspect in the chilling murders at the KNH.
Can Kennedy Kalombotole be charged?
Speaking to Citizen TV, Philip Maiyo, Kalombotole's lawyer, accused authorities of using a mentally unstable person as a scapegoat to conceal the real perpetrators behind the murders.
Maiyo further revealed the details of his conversation with his client, Kalombotole, saying that his client could not account for how he found himself at the police station.
Maiyo further argued that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) could not approve of the charges because they lacked sufficient evidence.
"This is a man, if you see him, he is small-bodied, he is dishevelled, very sickly, seemingly mentally unstable, chronically ill, suffering from at least three known conditions. Somehow, this person was able to commit a murder and cover up the evidence so that there is no evidence to charge him. This is a circus," he said.
Kalombotole's lawyer faulted the arrest, claiming that police officers were acting without sufficient evidence.
Is Kalombotole's lawyer pushing for his release?
He is now pushing to have his client released on bond to allow him to access proper medical treatment.
Maiyo argued that his client needed to be allowed to seek medical attention because he appeared unwell.
"He has not been arraigned in court. The earliest he will appear is Monday morning. By that time, he would have spent over 80 hours in the cold police cells, without adequate medical attention," Maiyo argued.
Kalombotole was re-admitted to KNH
This comes hours after the DCI discovered that Kalombotole was a patient at the KNH and was admitted to the same ward as his alleged recent victim, the late Maingi.
In a rather shocking finding, the DCI established that the suspect was admitted to the KNH in December 2024. Just two months into his admission, he allegedly murdered Kinyua.

However, despite Kalombotole being a suspect in Kinyua's death, he was not taken into custody due to a lack of enough evidence.
Kinyua's murder case disappeared from public scrutiny until another patient, Maingi, was murdered in the same ward.
