“There is a hole across the Expressway along Uhuru Highway where these boys run into after stealing. I managed to recover the phone,” he told TUKO.co.ke, in an exclusive interview.

Mulindi further revealed that the two suspects, aged 20 and 21, had attempted to flush the phone and had switched it to flight mode to avoid tracking.

He turned off the mode and escorted them to the Parliament Police Station, but they could not be booked immediately as an irate mob had attacked and seriously injured them.

"The phone was in flight mode, but I disabled it and have not yet received any call from the owner or their contacts. If anyone lost a Redmi phone that day, kindly contact me or report to the Green Park Police Station," Mulindi advised.

Who is the owner of the recovered Redmi phone?

From the phone's screensaver and a recent message, Mulindi identified the likely owner as Caroline.

“A message popped up saying, ‘Dear Caroline, your Airtel SIM swap was successful,’ and the lock screen bore her name,” he revealed.

In addition to the Redmi, he also recovered a Vivo handset, which had already been flushed. The Vivo phone was handed over to the Parliament Police Station.

Mulindi noted that such stolen phones are often taken to a man identified as Vaite on River Road, where they are flushed and resold.

He appealed to the national government through the National Police Service (NPS) to tighten security along Uhuru Highway, particularly the tunnel area opposite Parliament and the stretch toward Capital Hill.

"Lately, there have been a lot of phone snatchings and muggings along Uhuru Highway, directly opposite the Bunge and Uhuru Highway roundabout. My issue is not just the phone as a gadget, but the personal data it holds—memories, contacts, records you’ve spent years saving. Anyone who has lost a phone understands the deep inconvenience and emotional toll,” he said.
