Video: Suspected Police Impersonator Charged with Punching Real Cop, Arresting Civilian

Nairobi: A Kenyan man who roughed up a police officer after being arrested for allegedly impersonating a cop has been charged.

The suspect, who was identified as Emmanuel Mayi Onyango, was presented at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, July 21.
What charges were pressed against Emmanuel Mayi?
Mayi was charged with impersonating a police officer, assaulting a law enforcement officer and attempting to resist his arrest.

According to the court, Mayi had pretended to be a police officer and tried to arrest a man on the claim that he was found in possession of a suspected stolen chain.
"Emmanuel Mayi Onyango, you are being charged with impersonating a police officer contrary to section 101. On the 18th day of July 2025, at the Ngara Total Energies Services station, you pretended to be a police officer by arresting a Kenyan over the claim that he was in possession of a suspected stolen silver necklace," the court said.
Onyango was also accused of punching a police officer from the Ngara Police Station during the incident that occurred on July 18.
The accused pleaded not guilty on the three charges pressed against him and was released on a bond of KSh 100,000.
The case is set for mention on Monday, July 28.
"So, I've entered a plea of not guilty on all three counts. We are going to have the matter mentioned on the 4th of August for pre-trial. Given the application of the prosecution, we are going to grant you a bond of KSh 100,000 with a similar surety of the same amount. But in respect to a cash bail, you have to await a report to be availed by the probation officer before the cash bail amount can be determined by the court. The mention of the pre-bail report will be on July 28 for court number 5," the court ruled.
Man posing as police officer arrested
In a previous incident, a 30-year-old man identified as Daniel Mori Mohere, was arrested in Kayole, Nairobi, for pretending to be a police officer.
Mohere was apprehended on Monday, May 19, after the police carried out an operation.
The suspect's accomplices, including 59-year-old Julius Marwa Chacha and 27-year-old Caroline Mweni Nzomo, were also arrested.

Upon carrying out a search operation in the suspect's house, the police officers recovered a variety of uniforms.
