Emily Nyamoita Nyabuto left Kenya in 2023 in search of better opportunities abroad, hoping to lift her family out of poverty.
However, her dreams were tragically cut short when her family received news of her sudden death in June 2025, just days after she reportedly left the home of the agent who had recruited her.

When did Emily Nyamoita die?
According to her mother, Janes Mokeira, Emily had been planning to return home and had spoken to her on June 14.
However, on June 18, while she was at a hospital attending to her other critically ill daughter, she received a devastating call.
“I was at the hospital on June 18 when a friend of Nyamoita’s called and informed us that she had died. I had just spoken to her on June 14. I was shocked,” Mokeira recounted.
To date, the family has not seen her body. Their only confirmation of her death is a letter from the immigration department in Beirut.
“I just want to see my daughter’s body and confirm that she is truly gone. The pain of knowing she is far away and we cannot bring her home is unbearable,” Mokeira said.

Nyamoita’s aunt, Catherine Kerubo, described her as the family’s sole breadwinner.

"She was the pillar of this household. She went to Lebanon so she could support us. Even the daughter who is now sick in the hospital depended on Nyamoita for her medication,” she said.
What is Emily Nyamoita's hospital bill?
What now burdens the grieving family most is the overwhelming cost of repatriating Nyamoita’s body. The bill, they say, stands at over KSh 1 million—an amount they cannot afford.
They appealed to the national government and local leaders from Kisii county to help facilitate the return of their relative’s remains, so she can be laid to rest as per their traditions.
“This is a heavy blow to us. Even if we contribute until next year, we still won’t raise that money,” said Paul Ogise, Nyamoita’s uncle.
“They tell us the daily mortuary charges are over KSh 6,500,” Mokeira lamented.
Aden Duale's relative dies in Russia
In other news, a Kenyan medical graduate, Mahamud Hassan, died in Russia shortly after completing his studies and preparing to return home.
His death was confirmed by a family member, Osman, who described him as a promising young doctor. He also mourned the loss of Isnino Abdille, a beloved elder in the family.
He revealed that Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was reportedly assisting the family with plans to repatriate Mahamud’s body.
The double tragedy has left the family devastated as they prepare to lay their loved ones to rest.
