The elderly man, identified as Rashid Samula, accused the deceased, Joseph James Hassan, of stealing from him.

Rashid reportedly stormed into Joseph’s house in a fit of rage and struck him on the head with a blunt object, claiming he had taken his cooking stick, also known as a mwiko.

Did police arrest Rashid Samula?

Mtwara Police Commander Issa Suleiman confirmed the incident, noting that the blow delivered by the suspect led to the death of his neighbour.

Suleiman said that after realising what he had done, Rashid fled the scene and ran to a neighbouring village to hide.

“Police officers investigating Joseph’s death followed up and arrested the 50-year-old man who was in hiding,” he said.

The police did not reveal whether there was a deeper motive for the killing, as many questioned whether a cooking stick could justify such a fatal reaction.

The police commander assured the public that investigations would continue to ensure justice for the victim and his family.
