Ministry of Interior, Health Ranked Most Corrupt in EACC Latest Survey

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has released its latest survey showing the most corrupt national government ministries.

In a statement issued Tuesday, August 5, the commission stated that one is more likely to encounter unethical practices and corruption in the Ministry of Interior, which is headed by CS Kipchumba Murkomen and the Ministry of Health, which is headed by Aden Duale.

"The Survey sought to find out national government ministries and departments/agencies, and county government departments and services perceived to be most prone to unethical conduct and corruption in the country," the EACC statement read in part.

Which are most corrupt ministries in Kenya?

According to EACC, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration leads with 47.8%, followed by the Ministry of Health with 19.7%, and the pensions department in the National Treasury with 5.8%.

The Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, with 4.7%, Ministry of Education follows closely with 4.1 %.

"Ministry of Roads and Transport with 4.0%, Ministry of Defence with 2.8%, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Social Protection tied with 1.9%, Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action with 1.8%, Energy and Petroleum with 1.4%, Petroleum and Diaspora Affairs with 1.1%," the statement further read.

The Attorney General's office, Ministry of Sports, Water, Trade and Investments, Co-operatives and MSMEs, Tourism and Information and Communication Technology showcased the lowest cases of corruption with 0.9%, 0.7%, 0.5%, 0.4%, 0.3%,0.1%, 0.1% respectively.

EACC also conducted a survey on the government departments and agencies that are prone to corruption.

The Kenya Police topped the list with 48.2%, followed by the Directorate of Immigration with 5.1%, National Registration Bureau with 4.4%, Traffic Police with 3.2%, and the Social Health Authority with 2.7%

The data shared by the commission showed that most of the bribes are usually paid to hasten the service delivery process, secure favourable outcomes in legal processes and provide one with access to jobs, among others.

KRA tops list of most corrupt entities

This comes months after the EACC undertook 145 random integrity tests, uncovering the menace of corruption at various government agencies in the country.

According to the report, the Kenya Revenue Authority, the National Police Service (NPS), among other government agencies, were accused of bribery and fraudulent tax assessments.

NPS was put on the spot for taking bribes in exchange for leniency of traffic offences, licensing irregularities and case dismissals.
