A fresh petition dated August 6 and submitted by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony was formally received and stamped by the office of the speaker.

The document seen by TUKO.co.ke, includes a proposed motion for impeachment, a list of MCAs in support, and accompanying evidence said to back the claims.

The Clerk of the Assembly confirmed that the motion meets the requirements of Standing Order No. 70.

Will Kericho MCAs impeach Mutai again?

It has since been forwarded to the Assembly Business Committee, which will decide when to schedule it for formal debate. The speaker, through a statement, also acknowledged that the petition complies with the set procedures.

Although the petition does not publicly state the specific charges against the governor, sources within the county assembly say the renewed push stems from alleged concerns related to governance and accountability.

These claims, if found valid, could have serious implications for the county’s leadership.

If the assembly approves the motion by the required majority, the matter will proceed to the Senate for further consideration.

As per legal procedure, the county boss will be given the opportunity to present his defence both at the County Assembly and, if necessary, before the Senate.

Was Eric Mutai impeached in 2024?

This is not the first time the Kericho county boss is facing an impeachment process.

In October 2024, a previous motion sponsored by 31 MCAs made it to the Senate, where proceedings were halted after a majority of senators voted against continuing the hearing.

The governor had objected to the process, arguing that the assembly had failed to meet the two-thirds threshold required for a valid impeachment.

Despite objections from several senators who disputed his argument, 34 members voted electronically in support of halting the proceedings, while 10 voted to proceed.

That decision ultimately saved Mutai from removal, but the latest developments suggest the battle is far from over.

Why does Eric Mutai want Kericho assembly dissolved?

In a related development, the governor moved to petition the president to dissolve the county government. He said he would invoke Article 192 of the Constitution, citing internal conflict and poor governance.

Mutai accused MCAs and the county speaker of blackmail and extortion, claiming they were pushing for his removal after he refused to meet personal demands.

He revealed that some had asked him for large sums of money for private needs, which he declined to fund.

The governor said the situation had become unworkable and announced a signature drive to support his petition. He insisted that only fresh elections could give Kericho residents a chance to choose new leadership.
