Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his attacks on President William Ruto, now directly linking the Head of State to alleged dealings with Sudan's notorious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Somalia-based terror group al-Shabaab.

Gachagua's renewed onslaught follows a decision by the United States Senate to open investigations into Ruto’s alleged involvement with the RSF, a Sudanese paramilitary group accused of war crimes.

Why is the US Senate investigating William Ruto?

The US government will also be probing the controversial handling of youth-led protests in Kenya between June 2024 and July 2025, particularly during this year’s Saba Saba Day commemorations.

Speaking at an engagement forum in Olathe, Kansas City, Gachagua, who is currently on a two-month stay in the United States, confirmed that he is cooperating with US authorities in the ongoing probe.

“You cannot run away with it because I was your deputy; we have the evidence. I was there when all those meetings took place, and I have all the details. We are giving those details to the Americans, and we are right here in America. Ruto, you cannot run from this. The Americans have heard the cries of the Kenyan people," he said.

According to Gachagua, Ruto had previously hosted RSF leadership in Kenya, a move that sparked outrage from the Sudanese government and international human rights bodies, with Sudan accusing Kenya of violating international norms.

Gachagua further accused Ruto of using his ties with China as a smokescreen to deflect from the real issues.

“I saw Ruto today fumbling with words, claiming the Americans have a problem with him because of his relationship with China. That is not the issue,” he said. “The Americans want to investigate, to unearth, your business dealings with Hemedti (Mohamed Hamdan Dagal) of RSF, where you are doing good business and supplying arms to the terrorist group to kill women and children.”

Is William Ruto in business with al-Shabaab?

He also alleged that Ruto held a secret meeting with al-Shabaab operatives in Mandera.

According to the former deputy president, Ruto's directive to suspend vetting for foreign nationals before issuing them Kenyan identification documents poses a serious threat to global security.

“The Americans are concerned that suspected terrorists may easily acquire Kenyan IDs and use them to infiltrate other countries, including the US. This endangers the world,” Gachagua claimed.

The politician accused the president of disregarding the Kenyan Constitution and engaging in gross human rights violations, including abductions of young protestors.

Furthermore, Gachagua urged Ruto to face the allegations head-on instead of shifting blame.

“Stop hiding behind China. This is not about geopolitics; it’s about international security. This time, you won’t escape accountability. You may manipulate the Kenyan people, but you cannot manipulate the American government. You are on their radar,” Gachagua warned.

Did opposition threaten to take Ruto to ICC?

Meanwhile, before Gachagua's departure to the US, opposition leaders announced plans to take Ruto to the ICC over alleged crimes against humanity.

The team, led by Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, claimed to be gathering evidence to submit to the ICC prosecutor, accusing Ruto of violating both Kenya’s Constitution and international law.

They also condemned the police for acting as a state-sanctioned death squad under a repressive regime.

Further, they accused the government of weaponising law enforcement to silence dissent and suppress protests.

However, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed the accusations, saying the police have been doing their work professionally and that the government will continue to defend them.

Murkomen caused a ruckus when he ordered the police to shoot protesters who attempt to storm police stations and cause destruction.
