What started as a peaceful journey for students of Imusutsu High School took a tragic turn after their bus was involved in an accident at the Sirwa Posta area along the Kisumu-Busia highway.

The bus was reportedly headed to Meru for the Kenya National Music Festival when the accident occurred.

Authorities have arrived at the scene, and rescue operations are currently underway.

According to trusted sources, injured students and teachers were rushed to the Jumuia Friends Hospital in Kaimosi.

Were there any fatalities in the Sirwa Posta area accident?

So far, no fatalities have been reported.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle veered off the road when it reached a sharp turn, causing it to overturn.

Emergency responders, including police officers and local medics, arrived at the scene and assisted with the evacuation of the passengers, including teachers and students who were on board.

The police are yet to issue a statement on the exact cause of the near-fatal accident.

Footage from the accident scene captured the bus having overturned with most of its windows broken.

The wreckage of the bus was towed from the scene after everyone on board had been evacuated.

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, transport safety consultant Peter Muchiri emphasised that accidents involving school buses often stem from preventable factors such as speeding, driver fatigue, and poor road awareness. He noted that even in cases where fatalities are avoided, the psychological impact on students can be severe.

“While we are grateful that no lives were lost, such incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of strict adherence to road safety protocols. Drivers transporting school children must be extra vigilant, especially on unfamiliar routes or sharp bends, and school administrations should ensure their vehicles are regularly inspected before long journeys,” Muchiri said.

Two pupils killed as bus is involved in accident in Kampala

This comes days after two school children passed away following a grisly road accident along the Mubende-Kampala Road.

The fatal accident occurred along the Kagavu area on Sunday, August 3, at around 5:30 am.

According to a statement issued by the police, the accident involved a bus belonging to the HMK Transporters Ltd, which was transporting pupils of the Daystar Junior School in Kampala.

The bus was reportedly returning from an academic field trip when the gruesome accident occurred on the fateful day.
