Why top Agoro Sare KCSE student transferred to Maseno University

Her mother, Ruth Auma Otieno, a single mother of three, said the family could not afford the accommodation, as well as the high cost of living in Nairobi.

With the reporting deadline approaching and no breakthrough in sight, Velma applied for and secured a transfer to Maseno University, which she said is more affordable and closer to home.

“I was initially called to join the University of Nairobi, but I opted to transfer to Maseno because the accommodation is less expensive. If God makes a way for me to join there, it will be a bit cheap,” she told TUKO.co.ke.

For 12 years, Velma’s mother has also been taking on the father role. The father abandoned them while she was in Class Two.

Velma Adhiambo's challenging educational journey

Velma sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) at Oyugis Primary School, where she scored 359 marks. Although she was called to Migingo Girls High School, her mother could not afford the fees, so she joined Agoro Sare Mixed Day School.

The school’s principal, Joseph Ayieko, said Velma consistently topped her class from Form One and demonstrated outstanding discipline and focus.

"Despite her family's struggles, we supported Velma through high school, and she made us proud by scoring 76 points, the first girl in our school to earn an A-. We wish we could keep supporting her, but with many other needy students, we appeal to well-wishers to help her achieve her dream,” Ayieko said.

Although she has successfully transferred from UoN to Maseno University, the 18-year-old is still at risk of missing university due to a lack of school fees and upkeep.

Homa Bay girl risks missing university over fee arrears

Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported a similar case where a girl was at risk of being locked out of university admission for lack of the KCSE results slip.

The girl has been unable to get the result slip after her previous school declined to give it to her due to fee arrears.

She is now expected to raise at least KSh 50,000 to get the result slip, one of the requirements for the first-year admission.
