Mombasa: Police Intercept Bus, Arrest Man Over 90kg Bhang Disguised as Clothes

On Tuesday, August 11, officers from Changamwe Police Station, acting on a tip-off, set up an undercover ambush along the Changamwe Roundabout. The operation targeted a Buscar Bus Ltd vehicle suspected of ferrying narcotics.

How did police arrest suspected drug trafficker in Changamwe?

During the interception, the bus offloaded a suspicious bale disguised as second-hand clothes (mitumba).

Shortly after, a man on a motorcycle showed up to collect the package. Officers pounced, apprehending him as he attempted to load the luggage.

"A thorough search disclosed the luggage to be a 90kg sack stuffed with rolls of bhang, covered up in a black polythene bag and draped in clothing to mask its contents," the police report stated.

The suspect was detained at Changamwe Police Station and will be arraigned once the investigation is complete.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking and dismantling networks dealing in illicit substances nationwide.

"The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to dismantling the networks behind the trafficking of illicit brews, hard drugs, and illegal substances across the country," the law enforcement body affirmed.

Was a suspected drug trafficker in Busia arrested?

In Busia county, police arrested a man in Malaba Town after he was found in possession of five bales of bhang valued at approximately KSh 125,000.

Officers from the National Police Service based at Malaba Police Station carried out the August 10, 2025, operation.

The suspect was taken into custody pending processing and arraignment.

This incident came weeks after another suspect, Caroline Wanjiku Mwangi, was arrested by Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while attempting to smuggle drugs.

On-site field tests confirmed the substance was coc*ine, weighing about 1.3 kilograms.

In other news, a Florida woman travelling from Miami International Airport was caught attempting to smuggle two turtles hidden inside her brassiere.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations said that they allow small pets through checkpoints only if removed from carriers and carried openly.

Officials said one turtle died, while the other was handed over to the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife. They further warned against concealing animals on the body during screening.
