How did Orengo mourn Olwero?
Governor James Orengo strongly condemned the killing, terming it brutal and senseless.
In a statement shared on Facebook, he said Olwero had been shot under unclear circumstances and demanded thorough investigations to uncover the truth.
“Olwero was brutally shot this morning under unclear circumstances. We condemn this heinous act in the strongest terms possible and demand swift, thorough investigations to ensure justice is served,” Orengo wrote.
He added that no life should be cut short in such a manner and urged authorities to handle the matter with the seriousness it deserves, ensuring both accountability and justice for the family.
How was Olwero killed?
According to police, the events leading to Olwero’s death unfolded just after midnight when officers from Kombewa Police Station responded to a distress call from the resort’s manager, Sandra Okech.
She had reported a suspected burglary, prompting police to rush to the scene and secure the premises.
Unaware that officers were already on the ground, Olwero reportedly rushed to the property to assess the situation. He is said not to have informed the manager of his presence before entering the compound.
While officers were securing the rear of the resort, a group of six men allegedly armed with pangas and other crude weapons suddenly appeared from a nearby thicket. Police said the men advanced towards them, threatening to attack.
Did Olwero own White House resort in Kisumu?
In the confusion, officers reported that one of the men charged at them. Believing him to be part of the gang, an officer fired, fatally hitting Olwero. At the time, the police had not realised that the person before them was the resort’s owner.
The officers said they had earlier fired warning shots to scare off the suspected intruders, but the attempt failed. Amid the chaos, the fatal shooting occurred. The suspected burglars fled into the night, leaving behind a scene of shock and tragedy.
Authorities later confirmed that the incident was the fifth attempted break-in at the resort.
Olwero’s body was moved to the Kombewa Subcounty Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination, as police continue with investigations into the killing.
