Justice Samuel Mohochi on Monday, August 18, ruled that prosecution evidence presented during the nearly two-year trial proved that 36-year-old Cyrus Kipng’eno Rono was responsible for the death of his neighbour, Moody Awori.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Rono acted with intent and malice, pointing to the severity of the injuries inflicted on the victim.
"The manner in which the body of the deceased was found is indicative of the depth of violence he suffered at the hands of the accused. I find the accused, Cyrus Kipng’eno Rono, guilty of the offence of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code, and he is hereby convicted accordingly," Justice Mohochi noted.
Court records showed that on the evening of August 29, 2023, Rono, who worked as a night guard in Kiamunyeki, became suspicious after several failed attempts to reach his wife. At around 9pm, he excused himself from duty and rushed home.
A report by Citizen Digital revealed that when he knocked on his bedroom door, there was no response for a few minutes.
His wife eventually stepped out, appearing nervous, which heightened his suspicions.
On searching the bedroom, Rono found Awori, his neighbour, partially dressed and hiding under the bed.
How did Rono kill Awori?
The court heard that a furious Rono picked up a machete and launched a vicious attack, striking Awori multiple times.
Evidence presented indicated that the victim was repeatedly stabbed on the neck and limbs before succumbing to the injuries.
After the incident, Rono walked into Lanet Police Station and reported what had happened.
He then led officers to his house, where they found the lifeless body of Awori, and he was immediately placed under arrest and commenced investigations.
Government pathologist Titus Ngulungu testified in court that Awori died from severe head injuries inflicted by both blunt and sharp force trauma.

The post-mortem results corroborated eyewitness accounts and physical evidence recovered at the crime scene.
Rono now awaits sentencing, with the court expected to pronounce the punishment in the coming weeks.
