Nyandarua Gubernatorial Race: Survey Places Cecily Kariuki Ahead as 2027 Contest Shapes Up

The 2027 Nyandarua gubernatorial race is already stirring political debate, with a new Kenya Track Survey painting a picture of a highly competitive contest.

According to the survey, several seasoned leaders and fresh faces have emerged, each seeking to shape the county’s direction in the coming years.
1. Cecily Kariuki
Cecily Kariuki, former Cabinet secretary for Water and Sanitation, ranked as one of the strongest contenders.
Her tenure in government was marked by major infrastructure and irrigation projects that benefited rural communities.

Beyond her official role, she has worked closely with grassroots groups on health education, women’s empowerment, and youth development.
"Her tenure was marked by significant infrastructure projects, including the development of irrigation schemes that have had a lasting impact on rural communities," the poll report stated.
According to the survey, her community-focused approach and strong local ties have built her a solid support base.
"She has facilitated community outreach programs focusing on health education, women's empowerment, and youth development. Her hands-on approach and genuine concern for the well-being of the people have endeared her to many," it added.
2. Wakili Kinyanjui Theuri
According to the survey, Wakili Kinyanjui Theuri has been positioning himself as a unifying figure.
His campaign, which was reported to be centering on integrating the county socially, politically, and economically, is slowly gaining traction through his direct engagement with residents.
"Through his active engagements, Theuri is building a grassroots movement aimed at uniting communities and addressing their concerns," the report added.
3. Faith Wairimu Gitau
Faith Wairimu Gitau, the sitting woman representative since 2017, was also highlighted in the survey.
Known for championing women’s rights and community projects, she has built a political identity rooted in advocacy and service delivery.
Gitau's experience in the National Assembly and her deep understanding of the county's was attributed to make her a strong contender for the governorship.
4. Moses Kiarie Badilisha
Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha, seeking re-election, remains a central figure.
His administration has prioritised infrastructure and public service delivery, but has also faced questions over resource management.
The poll, however, noted that Badilisha's tenure has also faced challenges, including scrutiny over the management of county resources.
Despite the challenges, his incumbency keeps him firmly in the race.
5. Francis Kimemia
The survey also listed Francis Kimemia, former head of public service, among the figures to watch.
Although he has not formally declared his interest, his long career in governance and administration continues to fuel speculation about his potential candidacy.

With the poll results signalling a crowded and competitive field, Nyandarua voters may face one of the most closely watched contests in the 2027 elections.
Did Cecily Kariuki join Gachagua's camp?
In February, Kariuki met former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri.

The former CS, who served under former president Uhuru Kenyatta, visited him with her husband Kariuki Chege and a friend. During the meeting, she presented Gachagua with her memoir Breaking The Illusions.
Gachagua had been hosting a series of meetings with leaders from different regions since his impeachment in October 2024.
Retreating to his rural home after leaving office, he built networks and rallied support ahead of launching his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
