Machakos: Grief as Man is Killed by Hippo While Fetching Water from River Athi

This is after the man met his untimely death in the River Athi.

According to a report by Citizen Digital, the young man had gone to fetch water from the river when he was attacked by a Hippopotamus.

The unsuspecting young man had gone to the river in the company of his friend. Things took a tragic turn when he stepped on the hippo, according to witnesses.

He was trying to climb over stones, unaware that the hippo was resting just beneath the water's surface.

Upon stepping on the hippo, it got startled and mauled the young man. The friend who was standing on the riverbank when events unfolded called for help as he screamed.

By the time the unidentified young man was saved, he had already sustained serious injuries that had been inflicted on him by the hippo.

In a move to save his life, the victim was rushed to Kitui Hospital while he was in critical condition.

Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries before they arrived at the medical facility.

The body of the deceased was later taken to the Machakos Hospital mortuary for preservation pending identification by family members.

Community members were left in utter disbelief at the hippo attack that claimed the life of one young man.

They raised concerns over the human-wildlife conflict along the Athi River.
