The post, which circulated widely online, alleged that the anti-graft body would spare governors chanting 'Tutam' despite ongoing corruption cases.

It further claimed that the government had already filed 16 graft-related cases against the county bosses.

"Governors chanting 'Tutam' think that we will save them from corruption cases. The government has declared war on corruption, and 16 files have been filed," it read.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud clarified that the commission does not shield any public officer, adding that several high-profile investigations are underway.

How many governors were under investigation?

According to Mohamud, the EACC has concluded 89 high-profile cases in the last eight months, with 82 forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for possible prosecution.

The cases involve four governors, two former Cabinet secretaries, a principal secretary, as well as CEOs and managing directors of state corporations.

Investigations are also ongoing against five sitting governors and 11 former governors, with charges ranging from embezzlement of public funds to money laundering and conflict of interest.

He added that the EACC has stepped up its war on corruption by tightening surveillance on large projects, increasing scrutiny of service delivery, and expanding asset recovery efforts targeting wealth suspected to have been illegally acquired.

Earlier, Mohamud said that the commission had not received any formal complaints regarding bribery involving Members of Parliament.

“We have not received any complaints of bribery by MPs. If we ever receive any credible information, we shall definitely open investigations. I know the president, at his level, could be having information that we don’t have as of now,” Mohamud stated.

His remarks came after Ruto, backed by ODM leader Raila Odinga, accused some legislators of turning parliamentary committees into extortion cartels.

Ruto warned that lawmakers implicated in such schemes would face arrest and prosecution.
