In a presidential proclamation signed and issued on Monday, August 25, Ruto noted that August 27, 2010, marked a defining moment in Kenya’s history when the new Constitution was enacted, ushering in citizen-centred governance, devolution, equitable development, and protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.

"I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby proclaim that 27th August, 2025, and every 27th Day in the month of August forever thereafter shall be observed as 'Katiba Day' in commemoration of the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010," said the president.

The head of state observed that the upcoming 15th anniversary of the Constitution in 2025 presents a unique opportunity to reflect on and celebrate what is widely regarded as one of the most progressive constitutions in the world.

“It is befitting for the people of Kenya to commemorate this day as a reminder of our collective duty to obey, preserve, protect, and implement the Constitution,” Ruto said.

What will Kenyans do on Katiba Day?

According to the proclamation:

August 27, 2025, and every August 27 thereafter will be marked as Katiba Day across the country and in all Kenyan diplomatic missions abroad.

The day will be dedicated to renewing the nation’s commitment to constitutionalism, governance, and the rule of law through dialogue and civic awareness.

Katiba Day will remain a working day, but government institutions and schools will be required to organise and participate in civic activities that promote constitutional awareness and citizen engagement.

"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereunto have set my Hand and caused the Public Seal of the Republic to be affixed unto this Presidential Proclamation on this the … 25th … Day of … August … in the YEAR OF OUR LORD TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY-FIVE," he added.
