Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the lady, Sharon Jepchumba, explained her predicament and responded to the accusations levelled against her online.
She clarified that she did not lie about her child being sick but admitted to lying that the seven-month-old baby had undergone surgery.
Is Sharon Jepchumba’s baby sick?
The mother of one stated that her seven-month-old baby has chest problems and sometimes experiences breathing difficulties.
“We were referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), where he has been receiving treatment. I posted online that I was depressed, and that is how Irene Biwott offered to help me. She even paid our consultation fee at Racecourse Hospital as doctors were on strike at MTRH,” she explained.
Sharon stated that her baby was treated and that she used the money contributed online to buy drugs and cover other expenses.
She shared that her son was doing well until recently, when he struggled to breathe again, prompting her to reach out to Irene once more for help in seeking support from Kenyans online.
Why did Sharon fake her son’s surgery?
The remorseful woman admitted that she lied to Irene about her son undergoing surgery out of desperation.
“He got sick again, and we went to Reale Hospital, where I was told I needed to pay KSh 1,000, which I did not have. I called Irene, but I could not reach her for three days and panicked. That’s why I lied that my baby had surgery—to get Irene’s attention, as I felt I was already a burden to her,” she noted.

Regarding allegations that she blocked those who had been helping her, Sharon explained that she uses a daily-paid phone service, and when she fails to pay, her phone is switched off, making it impossible for people to reach her.
She further stated that she had spoken to Irene and apologised for deceiving her, adding that she was just desperate.
The mother of one mentioned that she is a graduate but has been unlucky in finding work, which has led to her financial struggles and online appeals for help.
“My baby is fine right now, but whenever he is unwell, I rush him to the hospital for nebulisation. I graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Management but I have not been lucky getting a job," she stated.

Irene also noted that Sharon lied about her baby undergoing surgery in Eldoret but failed to provide documents verifying her claims.
“Last week, I responded to her distress post and asked my amazing followers to help her 7-month-old baby, Shayan Kiprono, get medical care. She lied to us that her baby had surgery at Reale Hospital in Eldoret. I called her, and she said she was in town and had left her baby under the care of her cousin at the hospital.”
Irene further alleged that Sharon had called one of her friends, asking for rent money and funds to start a business. Sharon, however, clarified her intentions.
“It’s true I called her friend and asked if there was a way I could get support to start a business, which would have been a more lasting solution to my problems. I told her I work at a tea firm, and staying in the cold with the baby affects his health,” Sharon explained.
