Kenyan Man Abandons Teaching Career for Business, Mjengo Hustle: "Payment Wasn't Good"

A Kenyan man has opened up about a mandatory change in career after failing to land his dream job.

The man who graduated in 2015 dreamed of landing a job in teaching having been teaching three years before his graduation.

He noted that he had put his skills into practice courtesy of the opportunities he received from educational institutions.

"It has been 10 years since I graduated. Before I graduated, I had been teaching since 2012. I was working under the Board of Management (BOM). I have taught several schools within Kikuyu and Kiambu divisions," he said.

He highlighted one of the reasons for thinking twice about his teaching career and deciding to quit it was the payment.

Kenyan man asked to pay KSh 100,000 for TSC posting

According to him, he claimed the "payment was not so good on my side, and so I decided to quit."

"Currently, I am doing construction work, and I have a business," standing inside his alleged shop.

He admitted to someone trying to solicit some money from him for a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) posting.

"Yes, someone indeed wanted money from me for the TSC posting, but I was not sure if the people were under TSC. They were saying I should give them KSh 100,000 so that I could be enrolled, but fortunately or unfortunately, I did not have that money. So I decided to quote and do other jobs to earn a living," the frustrated man said.

When asked if he had received any postings 10 years after graduating, he said he had not received any yet, adding that he was no longer interested in teaching.

He observed the current trend in the country surrounding employment, noting that it was hard to get a job.

"I have seen that getting employment in Kenya and especially the TSC is very difficult because you have to give something after all and that is what has pushed me to continue doing whatever I am doing, which is mjengo and business," he added.

Tanzanian teacher resorts to crushing stones

In a separate story, a teacher from Iringa, Mafinga region, Tanzania, resorted to crushing stones after losing both legs in a fatal road accident.

Silvester Livale was forced to venture into something different after the fatal incident that left him paralysed.

Livale was involved in the accident in 2019, whose aftermath impacted his mobility after he lost his legs.
