The grass-thatched structure, constructed just five days earlier, was a symbol of community resilience.

How much did riders contribute?

Daktari Kelvin Kipchirchir Ufa told TUKO.co.ke that each rider had contributed KSh 30 towards buying grass and tree poles to create the shelter.

But the joy was short-lived when the project was destroyed overnight under mysterious circumstances.

“This now is pure sabotage. Hii sasa ni destroyers of economy,” said one devastated rider, struggling to comprehend who would destroy such a modest community effort.
“Sasa ikinyesha, tutakuja kazi kweli?” another asked, referring to the looming rains that make their work difficult without proper shelter.

Riders suspect county leadership

While the perpetrator remains unknown, suspicion is mounting among locals, with many pointing fingers at the county leadership.

Some believe the destruction was politically motivated, as the riders have recently been vocal about being neglected by their elected leaders.

Ezekiel, one of the boda boda operators, was visibly angry.

“Hii kesi nitaenda DCI lazima iwe investigated. We can't build alafu mtu aje kubomoa,” he declared.

He added that the group will not be silenced or intimidated, and that the destruction has only made them more determined to fight for their rights.

The incident has stirred a deep sense of betrayal, but it has also fueled a renewed spirit of unity. Riders are already mobilising to rebuild the shed—this time stronger and more durable.

“I’m ready to buy four second-hand iron sheets. Let’s contribute again,” said Doreen, one of the few women in the male-dominated trade. “They may bring down the shelter, but not our determination.”

Social media users joined the boda boda riders in condemning those behind the unwarranted demolition.

John Macharia:

"They should build it up again and forget about those who put it down and wait for God to punish them. This is extremely bad."

Jack Submarine

"I'm sure the area MCA summoned this because he felt embarrassed. But why can't he build them a better one?"

Back to ground zero

When the grass-thatched shed was built, it proved to be a test of unity, resilience, and the power of grassroots voices.

The idea was to shield them from the scorching sun and unpredictable rains, conditions they endure daily while waiting for passengers.

The destroyed shelter may now be just a pile of broken poles and scattered grass, but for Kapkilel’s boda boda riders, it represents something far greater.
