Kirinyaga: Well-Wishers Build New House for 75-Year-Old Widow after Hers Was Destroyed

A 75-year-old woman from Kamonoro village in Kirinyaga county expressed immense joy after well-wishers built her a new house.

Lucy Mararo made a heartfelt appeal for help a few months ago after her home was destroyed.
She called on Kenyans of goodwill to help her settle, explaining that she had no job due to her age, and her children were financially unable to fend for her.
Lucy had been left widowed and caring for her mentally ill daughter and her two grandchildren, as her husband died years ago.
What happened to Kirinyaga woman’s previous house?
Mama Lucy’s house was reduced to nothing by strong winds in that his her village.
However, a group of well-wishers led by Peter Maina came to Lucy’s rescue. They initially rented her a room at Kamonoro shopping centre while mobilising friends and community members to build her a permanent home.
“I’m happy, no more sleeping in the cold, and no more worry about paying rent. All we need now is food to eat,” said Mama Lucy.
Who built the Kirinyaga woman’s new house?
TUKO.co.ke spoke to Peter Maina, founder of the Leaning Shoulder Compassionate Community Organisation, who shared how the team managed to build the house.
He noted that a few local business people donated building materials, while Kenyans of goodwill contributed financially through online appeals.
“It has been a long journey, but Mama Lucy and her family now have a good house to call home,” he stated.
Peter added that they had to fast-track the project after the owner of the rented house issued a notice to vacate, as the building was due to be demolished.
He expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the project, ensuring the elderly woman and her family were finally well settled.
"We received timber from Paul Nthwiga, Charirt Njeru, James Kangangi, who both gave us cash to make the purchases needed," shared Peter.

Kakamega woman who lost child gifted decent house
In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a woman from Kakamega, who lost one of her children after walking for hours, was gifted a new house.
Bridgit, a widow, said she was stranded by the roadside after walking for three days straight with her children, heading to Eldoret.
With nowhere to go and no food, the woman and her children starved for the entire 72-hour journey, which tragically led to the death of one of her children.
Her plight was highlighted by a Kakamega-based philanthropist, who rallied financial support from Kenyans of goodwill. Their contributions helped purchase land for Bridgit and build her a new house.
