“I was shocked when I was told that both my kidneys were completely damaged. My creatinine level was at 2000. I was shattered. My journey to Canada was cancelled at that point, and I felt lost,” she said.
What caused Predencia Wafula’s kidneys to fail?
The 25-year-old explained that she had been healthy all her life and had never experienced any health issues, especially related to her kidneys.
However, doctors told her the kidney failure was caused by hypertension, which she developed during her pregnancy.
“Doctors said there’s a chance it may have started earlier without me realising, as there were no signs, but it fully manifested in 2024,” she said.
Since then, her life has changed drastically. Hospital visits, dietary restrictions, and regular treatment have become the norm.
Wafula said she undergoes dialysis sessions twice a week, with each session costing KSh 10,500.
“Sometimes the health insurance covers it, but when there are delays, we have to pay out of pocket. It hasn’t been easy. It’s both financially and emotionally draining,” she noted.
