A video of Martha Atieno opening up about the chilling incident has resurfaced, resulting in her immediate arrest.
How old is Martha Atieno?
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student gave a blow-by-blow account of the events that led to the baby’s birth and subsequent abandonment.
"After giving birth, I cut the umbilical cord. Afterwards, I cleaned the newborn, left the baby in the house, and stepped out," Atieno narrated.
The 23-year-old said she returned later to take the baby to the hospital, only to find the newborn alone.
She had left the baby with a man, but when she went back to the house, he was not there and had not said where he had gone.
Atieno describes newborn baby's sad condition
Atieno made a shocking discovery when she closely examined the infant.
"The baby was pale yellow and was breathing heavily. I was coming back to take the baby to the hospital. When I carried the baby, the baby bowed its head, and that was how the baby died," she shared.
Atieno did not take further action, and what followed was even more disturbing.
"That morning, I had exams. I was very desperate. So I had to go to school and sit for my exams. I left the baby in the house. When I returned, I wondered what to do with the baby. I was forced to throw it into the pit latrine. I didn’t tell anyone," she said.
Neighbours became suspicious after noticing that Atieno no longer had the baby, despite having carried the pregnancy to term.
Kanini speaks about Atieno's baby, plans
Judith Kanini, a neighbour, said she was concerned after realising Atieno no longer had a child and there was a foul smell coming from the latrine.
“She had earlier told me that she might move out,” Kanini added.
Daniel Musau, a Nyumba Kumi representative, said Atieno initially lied to them that she had taken the baby home, but upon further questioning, the truth emerged.
This information led to her detention as police launched investigations to gather further details and clarification.
