The children reported the matter to their parents, who then retaliated by reporting the teacher to the authorities.

The teacher revealed that, in addition to being taken to the police, he was also penalised financially.

Half of his salary was deducted as a result of the disciplinary action he took against the pupils.

"After being taken to the police today for punishing two children who were fighting, half my salary was also deducted. I want to inform parents that I will not touch your children again, no matter the case," he declared.

Is it right to report a teacher?

Brian explained that such reactions from parents discourage teachers from offering much-needed moral guidance and discipline.

In a follow-up video, clearly laced with sarcasm, he filmed himself seated at his desk while pupils could be heard fighting and making noise in the background.

He simply nodded in disapproval while holding a manila paper with a message echoing his caption:

"Me watching kids spoil themselves in class because their parents stopped us from touching them."

Is it legal for teachers to beat students?

Rules introduced in 1972 under the Education Act of 1968 outline how corporal punishment should be handled in Kenyan schools, according to details shared by the Human Rights Watch.

According to the 1972 regulations, caning was only allowed for serious offences like repeated laziness, lying, bullying, disrespect, truancy, or indecent behaviour.

Despite these guidelines, confusion has existed about whether teachers are still allowed to cane students.

In 1996, then Director of Education Elias Njoka reportedly announced a ban on corporal punishment, saying the practice should stop.

Globally, many human rights organisations oppose corporal punishment in schools.

They argue that it can amount to torture or cruel treatment, and that it harms children’s dignity, mental health, and their right to learn in a safe environment.
