Mwihoko: Eyewitnesses Narrate Moment Plane Crashed as They Watched in Fear

Mwihoko residents have recounted the scary moment they watched the ill-fated plane come down on the afternoon of Thursday, August 7.

This is after six people died and several others were left with serious injuries after the light aircraft belonging to AMREF crashed in Mwihoko, Kiambu County.

Eyewitnesses are now narrating what happened and the gore they were forced to witness after the accident.

One of the witnesses said she was on the balcony when she suddenly saw the plane spinning while it was on fire.

Before she could decipher what was happening, she saw it come down and burst into flames.

"I came here immediately and saw that it had crashed into a house, whose occupants were inside, including kids," she told NTV.

She said the locals swung into action to douse the fire with water from the neighbouring church, with the hope of saving some of the victims.

Another Mwihoko eyewitness speaks

Another eyewitness said he and his friends were playing football when they saw the plane crash.

He said upon arrival at the scene, they were met with gory scenes as human remains were scattered all over the scene of the accident.

This was echoed by another local who said he also saw human remains in the scene, adding that this discouraged him because he did not think anyone made it out alive.

"I was just seated in the house when I heard the loud bang. I came here only to meet remains all around. I did not think anyone made it out alive after the accident," he said.

Kenya Civil Aviation speaks on Mwihoko plane crash

On its social media platforms, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the aircraft accident and said it was a Cessna Citation 560 ambulance aircraft.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission. Our immediate priority is to support rescue efforts and provide all necessary assistance to the families affected. A full investigation through AAID will be conducted to establish the cause of this accident," the statement read in part.

The authority said the aircraft departed Wilson Airport (HKNW) at 02:14 PM local time en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, and it lost both radio and radar contact with Air Traffic Control at 2:17 PM, approximately three minutes after takeoff.

He said the people on board were four crew members and medical personnel, and that Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service are leading search and rescue operations on-site.
