Complete with bedrooms, a kitchen, and even a sitting room, Nyagana built the cave himself, carving out an underground bedroom he fondly calls ‘the underpass’, and another on the surface for rainy days.
“I sleep down here, but when it rains, I go to the upper bedroom,” he said, showing his dimly lit underground room.
What are the features of Nyagana’s cave home?
The elderly man transformed his environment into a self-sustaining home, with a water reservoir next to the cave. He said he hopes to someday fit it with a pump to supply water to his neighbours.
He used the soil he excavated while building his cave house to make bricks, which he sells for KSh 10 each to passers-by.
“The more I work and live on this earth, my most important master is God,” he said.
He made bridge-like wooden structures to connect different parts of the compound.
Nyagana has a room for chickens and plans to make a fish pond, showing his drive to remain productive even at his age.

Why does Johnson Nyagana live in cave?
The 90-year-old man hopes younger generations will one day visit to see and learn from his unique home.
“My dream is that the new generations can come, see this home, and learn,” he said.
Despite challenges, he is still building a canal linking the cave to a visitors’ room.
Why has Migori man dug his own grave?
In an unusual move, Nyagana already dug his own grave just metres from his compound, next to his late wife’s.
The grave is surrounded by bricks, and he hopes to tile it to make it look classy.
“I dug my own grave out of love, just next to my wife’s grave. Even Jesus was buried in a borrowed grave, but I have already prepared my resting place,” he explained.
Nyagana is now appealing for support to turn his cave home into a palace, a legacy he hopes will inspire future generations.
Why was Murang’a man living in cave?
In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a man from Murang’a lived in a cave for over 20 years after his family abandoned him.
Francis Murigu suffered mental health problems, and his wife left him, leaving only one child who stood by his side.
Fortunately, years later, well-wishers took him to a mental hospital where he stayed for three months seeking treatment and built him a brand-new home to start over.
