Once a teenage mother who had to drop out of school, she has now become a qualified midwife, helping women bring new life into the world.

Why Brenda dropped out of school

Nkani reports that Brenda’s aspirations of becoming a nurse seemed to fade when she fell pregnant while in Grade Nine, forcing her to leave school.

However, she refused to let her circumstances define her future. Holding on to her childhood dream, she sought a way to get back on track.

Her journey began when she secured a job as a hospital auxiliary worker, a stepping stone that allowed her to gain experience in the medical field.

She later joined the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) project, where she acquired additional skills and knowledge.

How Brenda balanced work and school

Understanding that education was key to achieving her goal, Brenda made the difficult decision to return to school.

Without a Grade 12 certificate, she enrolled in night classes, balancing work and studies with sheer determination.

Her hard work paid off when she successfully obtained her secondary school certificate.

With this achievement, Brenda was able to enrol at the Chikankata School of Nursing, where she trained as a registered nurse.

But she didn’t stop there—her passion for maternal health drove her to pursue an advanced diploma in midwifery.
