The 53-year-old mother from Kombewa, Kisumu County, was unprepared for the devastating news that awaited her.
David Awinda's last moments
The visitor hesitated before delivering the tragic news: two students had fallen into a septic tank at the school the previous evening and were feared dead.
Awinda told the media that at that moment, she was not aware that there had been an accident at his son's school.
Immediately, she and her daughter, Celine Auma, rushed to Ramba Boys High School on a boda-boda.
On arrival, they found a crowd of anxious parents gathered outside the school gate, barred from entry by security guards and police officers.
The heartbreaking confirmation
After waiting for about 10 minutes, Auma received a call summoning them to the principal’s office.
A foreboding sense of doom washed over the mother as she trembled uncontrollably. When they were ushered in, the principal, Wycliffe Mambwa, confirmed their worst fears.
"I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I felt hollow, as if my heart had stopped beating. My head began spinning, and I barely processed the words that followed," Awinda recounted tearfully.
Grieving mother demands justice
The grieving mother now blames the school administration for her son's death, citing negligence.
She argued that if the principal had listened to the numerous complaints from students about the hazardous septic tank, her son would still be alive today.
"Imagine being trapped in a septic tank for 12 hours. I cannot fathom the pain he endured," she said amid sobs.
Overwhelmed with grief, she expressed her desire to take legal action against the school but cited financial constraints.
They also expressed anger at the fact that the principal only called at 6:48 am on Sunday, 12 hours after the incident.
