Hellen Olunga is struggling to come to terms with the sudden demise of her husband, Stephen Okumu.
Olunga shares last moments before Okumu's death
Okumu was demolishing their kitchen wall when it collapsed on him, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he unfortunately passed away.
Olunga recounted the last moment before the accident happened and rendered her a widow with five kids to care for.
"While he was demolishing the wall, I took the clothes and went to do laundry. He had already removed the iron sheets and so he only remained with the wall. When I was outside the gate, I heard him instructing our child to get out. 'Get out, get out' is what he repeatedly said. A moment later, I heard another child say, 'The wall is collapsing on dad'. When I went back, I found the wall had crumbled on him," she said.
Okumu rushed to Kakagema County Referral Hospital
With the help of neighbours and good Samaritans, Olunga rescued her husband from the heavy and destructive rubble.
They rushed the injured man, who worked as a boda boda operator, to a nearby dispensary.
"Unfortunately, they could not help him. They called an ambulance to rush him to Kakagema County Referral Hospital. His leg was not only injured but broken, and he was having pains in his chest," Olunga recalled.
Okumu's brother recounts last moments with him
Okumu passed away while receiving treatment, leaving his family in unprecedented pain and leaving his wife with an overwhelming burden of caring for the young children.
The deceased's brother recalled the last moments with him before he passed away after the accident.
"I had held his leg. He asked me to lift his chest and move him. I did that and placed his head on my thighs. Around 3 pm, his chest started swelling. He asked me, 'My brother, will I get well?' I told him, 'My brother, you will get well'. Around 6:25 pm, he asked me to hold his hand and pull it. He told me, 'My brother, I have gone,' and he died," he said.
Olunga makes humble plea to government
Olunga noted her deceased husband had been struggling to care for the family.
She is trained as a teacher, but she has been unemployed for nine years.
"I would love to be employed so that I can care for my kids as they continue with school. I am asking the government if it can employ me so that I can help myself and my kids, how the can eat, go to school and have other needs met," she said.
