The love story of Kelvin Muthomi from Ikuu and Jacinta Mutuku has been that of struggle and poverty, but they are still holding on to each other with hope.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Dennis Mugendi, a friend of the family, narrated that Muthomi lost his eyesight years ago due to cataracts that worsened into full blindness.

"His journey has not been easy. His mum abandoned him as a young boy, and his grandmother took him in. However, his grandmother died while he was still young," Mugendi narrated.

Despite his hardships, he soldiered on, and with help from a compassionate pastor, he joined a school for the visually impaired and completed both primary and secondary education.

It was during his time at secondary school that he met the love of his life, Jacinta, who was partially blind and a year ahead of him.

She patiently waited for him to finish school so that they could start their life together as a married couple.

Their dream came true, and they were blessed with their lovely son, Timothy. Muthomi's uncle gave them a house to settle in, and for a while, their marriage flourished.

"Sadly, the uncle who had offered them shelter sustained two serious injuries and he had to reclaim the house that he had offered them, plunging the couple into homelessness," Mugendi said.

Though it was a setback, Muthomi did not hold any bitterness against his uncle, and he had to return the house to his uncle due to the prevailing circumstances.

Well-wishers to the rescue

Luckily, a group of well-wishers based in Machakos learnt about their plight and provided a temporary place for the family to lay their heads.

"The well-wishers now want to build the couple a decent home they can call their own, which can offer them and their child some form of stability and security that every human being deserves," he said.

On Sunday, April 13, they will hold a fundraiser, hoping to raise enough money to put up a decent home for the blind couple.

On her part, Jacinta said she is also seeking financial help to undergo a crucial surgery that could restore her eyesight.

"My husband cannot see at all, but I hope to undergo a crucial surgery that can help me see again. I want to be his eyes, and be in a position to support our family," she said.
