"It has not been easy for all of us as a family. My father and mother went their separate ways many years back, and she has had to be strong for all of us. We are five children in my family, and we have not had a smooth ride. I had to drop out of school in Form Two for a year because of school fees challenges. I was in and out of school in high school. My principal let me study because I was performing well, promising not to kick me out or ask me for school fees as long as my grades were stellar," Onditi's daughter said.

Ouma also suffered throughout his school days like his elder sibling, struggling to be consistent in school.

How many marks did Ouma get in his second KCPE attempt?

He sat for his first Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam in 2020, where he scored 349 marks.

"We admitted him in high school with mum, but he was in and out because of school fees until the principal refused to take him back until his fees arrears were cleared. He said he was willing to go back to primary school to try his luck one more time so that he could get a scholarship. In 2022, he went back to Grade 7, sat for his second KCPE in 2023 and got 379 marks. My mum looked for a scholarship for him and got one," Ouma's sister said.

The scholarship was to cover half of the school fees as the family catered for other needs. Despite the agreement, it was still tough for the family due to their financial status.

She noted that a family member who was assigned the duty of paying for Ouma's lunch program failed to do so, and the money accumulated.
