"I was born normal and I could see, but after seven years, I was diagnosed with polio. I was treated, but later it affected my eyes. My parents were not able to detect it as they found out about it late. I underwent an operation, but the results were small.
"I attended the school for the blind until Grade Seven. I later went a college to work as a telephone operator. Despite taking up the job, I also worked with the government for 20 years without a contract or pay and in the end I was dismissed and returned home," he said.
Herman met the pastor of Christ Ambassador Church in Sinoko, who gave him a room in the church compound, which became his home for two decades.

Evaline echoed her husband's words, saying life is indeed difficult, as she asked the authorities to intervene.

Our daughter went to school until the seventh grade before dropping out. Her brother however sat for his Form Four exam, passed and was called to university but we do not have money for his school fees.
"For now he is at home but works menial jobs from time to time. He was called by another pastor to help him, but his sister is at home," she said.
