Eldoret Mum Tearfully Pleads for Justice for Son Allegedly Killed, Dumped in River by Police

A heartbroken mother from Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county, is appealing for justice for her son, who met his untimely fate.

Ali Abdi was allegedly killed by a police officer who reportedly threw him into the Sosiani River, where his body was later retrieved.

How old was Ali Abdi?

The 25-year-old was allegedly running away from the police during a chaotic demonstration at Kipkaren estate.

His mother could not hide her pain as she mourned her son, who was allegedly last seen in the custody of a cop from Yamumbi Police Station.

"He hunted him down until they reached the water body. When they reached the river, he raised his hand. Instead of the police handcuffing and arresting him, he chose to throw him in the water. Many people saw it," Abdi's grieving mum, Fatuma Abdullahi, claimed.

Abdi's sister was equally fiery as she recounted the tragic event that left the family seeking justice.

She supported her mother as she questioned the brutality of the police officer who reportedly ended her brother's life.

"A woman told us she had seen a lifeless body floating on the stream around the exact time the incident happened. It was around 12pm or 1pm, which means our kin was killed in the water. We are asking the government why the police would chase a young man to the point of his death.
"Why didn't the officer arrest him and take him to the cell? If someone has done wrong or committed a crime, they serve their term. But why does a police officer reach the point of committing murder? That is extreme," she angrily asked.

How was Ali Abdi's body?

She added that a young man witnessed the whole ordeal of Abdi being chased down by the police, even describing his physical features.

She recounted the chilling state the body of her brother was found in at the river after a long and tiresome search.

"He was facing down and was without clothes. His body was swollen as he had been there for several days, as he had been there from Monday, April 5," she said.

Protests in Eldoret following Ali Abdi's death

Fatuma reiterated she wants justice for her son, urging the government and relevant authorities to look into the matter.

She struggled to dry her tears as family members consoled her after the sudden and painful loss of her dear son.

Residents held a demonstration following the tragedy, protesting the alleged violation of rights by the police after Abdi's death.

It was a cat-and-mouse game as the angry residents had to be separated with tear gas.
