Kisii: Tragedy as 6-Year-Old Child Dies After Sleepwalking Into Open Borehole

Kisii county — Residents of Nyaribari Masaba ward are mourning the tragic loss of a six-year-old boy who died after falling into a borehole while reportedly sleepwalking in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 4.

According to the distraught parents, the child had a history of dreamwalking, often waking up in the middle of the night, opening doors, and wandering outside in his sleep.

How Kisii boy got out of house

In previous incidents, the parents had resorted to locking the doors with a padlock at night to prevent him from leaving the house.

Tragically, on the night of the incident, the family was unable to locate their usual padlock.

"We were awoken around 2 am by faint cries coming from outside," Dismas Bosire, the deceased boy's father told Kisii TV.

Upon stepping out to investigate, they were horrified to hear the child’s voice coming from a nearby borehole.

Neighbours try to save drowning boy

Panicked screams alerted neighbours, who quickly gathered to help in the rescue efforts.

"Despite our desperate attempts, my son could not be saved," the grieving father added.

He was eventually retrieved and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The boy’s body is currently lying at the mortuary as the community comes to terms with the heartbreaking loss.

Authorities are expected to investigate the safety conditions surrounding the borehole and consider preventive measures to avoid future tragedies.

In an unrelated incident, another family in Kisii recently suffered a double tragedy after their elderly patriarch, James Makarabe Onuong’a, was found dead in a river.

Mzee Makarabe disappeared on his way to collect his late wife’s body for burial, hours after giving out his ID card to his son.

His disappearance sparked a frantic search, with relatives pleading for help before his lifeless body was discovered in the water.
