“I hadn’t gone to school because I failed to finish the SST assignment. I was afraid to go because I knew the teacher would cane me for not doing her work, and my mum would punish me for skipping school,” she explained.

She used her school bus fare to travel to a nearby village where she believed her aunt lived.

Karen claimed she feared the SST teacher because the teacher often punished her unfairly.

“I don’t have a problem with other teachers—just this one. She likes punishing me. Even when going around the classroom, she corrects my classmates nicely, but beats me for the same mistakes,” she said.

Where was Karen Daniel?

Speaking to Gadi TV, Karen said she had intended to reach her aunt’s home but got lost on the way.

“I took a bus but alighted at the wrong stop. While walking around, I got lost and ended up at the village chairman’s home, where I stayed for two days,” she shared.

Karen’s mum overjoyed after daughter’s return

Rose Tobias, Karen’s mother, thanked God for bringing her daughter back home safely. She said she received a phone call around 10 p.m. informing her that Karen had been found.

“My younger sibling told me she was on her way to pick up Karen, who was in Uswailini. I was so happy I became confused. I even woke up my neighbours to join me in welcoming her home,” Rose said.

She added that although she hadn’t yet spoken in depth with Karen, she understood that her daughter was scared of being punished for missing school.

Rose promised to have a conversation with Karen’s SST teacher to find a lasting solution to the girl’s fears and challenges.

Is corporal punishment best for pupils

TUKO.co.ke spoke to a deputy head teacher (preferred anonymity) who said in many instances corporal punishment worked well.

He explained that most times teachers are only out to correct and students or pupils who fear punishment would work hard to avoid being culprits.

"Teachers always want their students to pass, they see potential and when we see these kids not living up to their potential, we try all means to push them. Teachers are happy when their students succeed.

Netizens express concern over punishment for kids

Netizens expressed sympathy for the girl, concern over harsh discipline in schools, and relief at her safe return.

Neem Gabriel:

“Mungu asante. Mtoto mzuri umerudi, Mungu akupe maisha. Usitoroke tena. Kama mwalimu anakusumbua, bora umwambie mama. Asante Mungu.”

Cheikna Mouna:

“Kuna mwalimu alinitesa sana. Kila kosa ananiwekea. Wiki haishi nikiwa naitwa ofisini kupewa adhabu: mara nifute vioo, mara nioshe vyombo. Yule mwalimu Shine—popote ulipo, Mungu anakutazama. Najua umestaafu, lakini tambua kwamba sasa naishi maisha mazuri kuliko yako.”

Doris Shangwe:

“Mtoto ametoroka kutokana na ukali wa mama. Ndio, mwalimu amesumbua, lakini hiyo siyo kesi kubwa sana.”
