Changara speaks on spiritual journey in Saudi
Changara, who had gone abroad in search of greener pastures like many Kenyans, returned home with significant physical injuries.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the unemployed mother said she came back in a wheelchair, citing physical assault by her employer.
“It was in my second year in the Gulf when my employers changed for the worse. It began with the madam, then her husband turned on me. I remember a time when he attacked me and hit me with a timber on my hip. That was when I knew my life was in danger, and I kept praying, asking God to protect me.
I spent many days fasting and praying. I was in pain and struggled to work because I was wounded, yet still expected to perform my duties. It was tough. I sent messages to the agency offices and even to the ambassador's office, but I never received any help,” she said.
Changara opens up about being poisoned in Saudi
Previously, Changara said she had been poisoned by her female employer, but she survived despite suffering severe side effects.
She recalled that her feet and stomach swelled after she consumed a harmful substance placed in her food one evening.
“That evening, the madam invited me to eat with them. She was unusually nice and welcoming. I sensed something was off because that wasn’t her usual behaviour. I had also heard stories of how househelps were killed, went missing, or were poisoned — and this is how it often started.
I ended up eating the contaminated food, but didn’t finish my plate. I felt my throat dry up, and despite drinking several glasses of water, I didn’t feel better. I went to my bedroom and locked myself in. I knew this is how people were sometimes found dead in their rooms, but I prayed,” she said.

Changara taken to airport in wheelchair
After struggling with her health and being unable to perform her duties, Changara returned home.
She had received no medical care, and her health had deteriorated to the point where she could no longer walk.
“At the airport, I was taken in a wheelchair. My feet were swollen, my spine was dislocated, and my hip was injured. I was very sick, but I finally got my ticket back home, and there was no way I was staying behind,” she said, recounting her journey back.
Changara has since made significant progress. She now uses crutches for mobility and can manage a few tasks on her own, though her hip has not yet fully healed.
