An update has been released concerning the devastating fire that swept through the Makina area of Kibera, Nairobi county.

According to Emuhaya constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Omboko Milemba, the fire claimed more lives than initially reported.

Two siblings—a brother and a sister—tragically lost their lives in the blaze. The incident also left many people homeless as several houses were razed to the ground.

"Following the earlier statement issued on Monday, May 26, regarding the devastating inferno that swept through the Makina area of Kibera, we regret to confirm further loss of life from our community," Milemba stated.
He continued, "The family of Moses Okwoku, residents of Musimbi Village in Emuhaya constituency, has been directly affected by the tragedy. We mourn the deaths of Harrison Liaha and Yvonne Okwoku. This sad confirmation brings the total number of individuals lost from Emuhaya to seven."

The MP shared three photos of the siblings who perished in the fire, which sparked public outrage and concern.

In one of the photos, the young man is seen posing for a selfie in a music studio; in another, he is playing the piano.

Kibera fire raises questions about emergency preparedness

A separate photo shows his sister, smiling and wearing a white top, outside a home compound.

"We further report that Harrison Liaha's wife survived the fire but is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Our office is coordinating with the family to ensure she receives appropriate medical support and that the family is assisted during this period of grief and recovery," Milemba added.

"This tragedy continues to deepen—not only in terms of loss—but also in the questions it raises about urban housing safety, emergency preparedness, and the value placed on human life in informal settlements."

He also noted that preparations for the repatriation of the deceased to Emuhaya were already underway and expressed appreciation for the community’s outpouring of support and solidarity during this difficult time.

Midnight fire kills nine family member in Siaya

In another related tragedy, a fire in Ugunja, Siaya county, claimed the lives of nine family members.

The fire, suspected to be arson, occurred at midnight while the victims were asleep, leaving the community in shock and raising serious concerns about local security.

According to preliminary reports, the attack was allegedly tied to a land dispute that the family won in court.
