"The last time she was seen at her place was on a Sunday, May 18. She had washed her clothes and taken them to the hanging line on the rooftop. On Monday, May 19, she didn’t report to work. She worked as a waitress at a hotel. Her boss tried calling her, but she didn’t answer, so he sent one of her colleagues, who lived in the same neighbourhood, to retrieve some keys," Atieno narrated.

Atieno sent to Nairobi by her mum

When Akinyi’s colleague arrived at her house, she found the door slightly ajar. She retrieved the keys from a bag that Akinyi usually kept and returned to work.

When Akinyi neither returned to work nor responded to calls from her boss and mother, Susan Achieng' Abuya, concerns grew.

Achieng' asked Atieno to travel to Nairobi to check on her elder sister, who was also a mother of two.

Atieno visits Ruaraka Police Station

She took the phone to their boss since Akinyi didn’t have any family nearby.

"He happened to answer my mum’s call and explained everything. That’s when my mum called me and sent me to Nairobi. I went straight to Ruaraka Police Station when I arrived in Nairobi and was given OB number 47. Afterwards, I went to Akinyi’s house to investigate further and then returned to the station with her boss and colleague. They advised me to start enquiring from mortuaries because these days, missing for so long can mean something serious."
"We went to City Mortuary — our first and last stop. The attendant told us about an unclaimed body that had been brought in a few days ago by Korogocho police officers. I asked to see a photo. It was my sister," she cried.

Atieno, who sat for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2022, later learned that her sister’s body had been retrieved from a river.

"I called my mum and explained the situation. Now we’re stranded because we don’t have money for a postmortem or to pay the morgue fees. We also want to transport her body to our village home for burial, but we have no finances," she said tearfully.
