“On the fateful day, Wangeci left home around 9:30am. She was going for a chama meeting at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) in Pipeline before proceeding to Eastleigh market. I wasn’t going to work that day, so I was at home.
I called her around 2 p.m. to ask if she had bought the items she intended to buy. I also wanted to know if she was on her way home, as the clothes that had been washed needed to be taken from the hanging line—but I ended up removing them myself,” he narrated.
Maina shares his wife's chama loan
Maina, a father of twin girls, said he did not call his wife again that day as he was confident she would return home.
He waited until it got late past Wangeci’s usual arrival time, which made him increasingly worried about her whereabouts.
“I tried calling her phone around 10pm, and since then, she has been unreachable. The following day, I started searching for her in different shops in Eastleigh and asking other vendors if they had seen her. We were told she was seen with another woman around lunchtime, but we have not been able to identify the said woman.
We were also told she had a loan from the chama, but she had been paying regularly without any issues. She was diligent and committed to clearing the debt, with no record of defaulting,” Maina said.
Wangeci's children cry for her safe return
Maina, who has been married to Wangeci for over 20 years, said they rarely fought, and when they did, they resolved their issues amicably.
He appealed for her safe return, pleading with anyone who might be holding her captive to release her, as the family is distraught.
“Please release her. If there is any issue, we will resolve it. We are very worried about her. The kids, who are in college, are concerned.
They cry every day, asking about their mother—when and if she will return. They are completely heartbroken,” Maina said.
